Crossflash or downgrade: what’s the difference?
Both put different firmware on your drive so ripping software can read UHD discs. The difference is where the firmware comes from.
Downgrade
A downgrade installs an earlier firmware release for the same model. On a few Pioneer models, such as the BDR-S13U, that’s the change the app makes.
Crossflash
A crossflash installs firmware from a compatible sister model, usually its “U” version, such as a BDR-XD07 taking BDR-XD07U firmware. Afterwards the drive may report the sister model’s name.
Which one your drive gets
You don’t need to choose. The app decides from your drive’s exact model and firmware. Where more than one firmware is supported, as on the BDR-212DBK, you can pick another from a short list or keep the recommendation. LG drives work the same way: the app picks compatible firmware for the model.
