How do I find my drive’s firmware version?

The firmware version is a short number, such as 1.55 or 3.10, that the drive reports about itself. It matters because two drives with the same model name can need different firmware, depending on the version they have now.

The quickest way

Download trev.bot flash, connect the drive and run the check. The app shows the model and the installed firmware, and whether a flash is available for that exact pair. It changes nothing.

Without the app

  • MakeMKV: if you already use it, its drive information shows the firmware version.
  • macOS: System Report (System Settings › General › About) usually shows the firmware revision under Disc Burning.
  • Windows: there’s no obvious place for it, so the app or MakeMKV is the easiest way.

Pioneer firmware from December 2022 onward

Pioneer firmware updates from December 2022 onward stop ripping software from reading UHD discs on many drives. If your drive has one of those versions, a downgrade or crossflash may be available for it. If you’re buying a drive, the firmware it ships with matters too.
